‘We need to talk,’ he whispered so softly that the sound of the running water almost drowned it out.

What’s going on?’ I asked nervously, drying my hands with a towel.

He took a step closer and leaned down to my ear.

“As long as your son isn’t here… take the hammer and break the tiles behind the toilet in the bathroom. No one must know.”

I laughed involuntarily — I thought the old man had lost his mind.

“Why ruin the renovation? We’re about to sell this house…”

But he cut me off abruptly, clasping my fingers with his bony hands.
